Unfolding The Horizon (2025)
Artist: Kimsooja

Location: 6444 Willingdon Avenue, Burnaby, British Columbia
Material: Scribed Rolled Steel Tube, Industrial Coatings

[Artist Statement]

Photography by: In house

Project Details

Each of the steel tubes making up a ring is scribed on a lathe,
receiving a thin line every .750” on center, along its full length.
The tubes were then rolled to a specific radius, trimmed
and fit to make up a completed ring. Each of the 5 ring were then set
into a custom frame allowing it to be rotated horizontally or
vertically, as needed for the attachment of the pre constructed
base, and the insertion of the temporary lifting points with
their respective custom caps. This custom frame also allows
adjustments and accessibility to the coatings department
for the application of multiple prepping, masking, and paint
operations. The scribed lines act as guides for the layout and masking
of 730 stripes per ring.
