Artist Statement
Family; Five Figures for a Triangle is inviting, hopeful, humorous and connected to the concept of home and body
Family; Five Figures for a Triangle sits in a residential neighbourhood where families from all cultural backgrounds have lived for generations. The concept proposed and realized for this site engages the neighbourhood’s history of domesticity.
The project was developed using only materials I use in the studio; cardboard, textiles, patterned fabrics, painted paper and metal zippers. With these materials in mind I began thinking about the site in terms of abstract figuration.
The maquettes created in the studio for this project ranged between 15 to 24 inches. Once completed the challenge became how to translate the two-sided fabric, painted card and aluminum zippered figures into outdoor sculptures that could withstand the elements while retaining their material integrity.
Based on the original maquettes five steel and aluminum sculptures were custom designed and fabricated by the Carvel team in Calgary. Once their panels and zipper completed, the five sculptures were disassembled and shipped to the US where they received dye-sublimated surfaces. Once dye sublimated the sculptures were sent back to Calgary where they were re-assembled and packed for installation in Vancouver in the fall of 2020.
