Location: Telus World of Science - Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
Material: GFRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete,) Galvanized Steel,
Stainless Steel, Clear Coat, Metallic Flake
Vessels explores the connection between land and sky,
our connections to the spirit world and the gifts passed
down by our ancestors. The works are meant to be
conceptual, honoring water and food, gathering, gifting
and receiving, connections, and relationships we build
with one another and our ancestors. The works are based on the
shards of Indigenous pottery found on the shoreline of the Red River, where
the artist’s family comes from. Indigenous pottery shards uncovered
by archaeologists within this region suggest Indigenous
ceramics were practiced within this site for over 2000
years. While the exact histories and makers of these
ancient vessels may be unknown, this artwork represents
the kinships and relationships built through the making
and use of vessels within our communities.

Project Details
Three ceramic bowl artifacts were provided by the artist as
inspiration for larger reproductions. Each shard was digitally
sculpted, with art direction by Becca Taylor, and refined to
represent the artifacts in every detail. The parts were scaled up
and milled in the negative as multi piece molds. The GFRC
(glass fiber reinforced concrete) was applied to the molds surfaces
creating a solid copy. When the castings were removed from
the molds the surfaces were hand finished and prepared for coating with
a custom sealer containing suspended metal flakes. Each sculpture was then
placed on its concrete footing, and then mounted with threaded stainless steel
rods and hardware.
